Experience the freedom of flight over beautiful Northland
Kaikohe Gliding Club is a friendly, volunteer-run club based at Kaikohe Aerodrome in the Bay of Islands, Northland.
Whether you would like to experience your first glider flight, learn to fly, return to gliding after some time away, or simply become part of a great aviation community, you are very welcome to join us.
🛩️ Come Gliding With Us
Gliding is one of the purest forms of aviation — flying without the continuous use of an engine and learning to use the atmosphere itself to stay airborne.
Our club welcomes:
-
People wanting to try gliding for the first time
-
Student pilots wanting to learn to fly
-
Experienced and returning glider pilots
-
Young people interested in aviation
-
Private glider owners
-
People who simply want to become involved with the club
You do not need any previous flying experience to get started.
🌤️ Trial Flights
Wondering what gliding is really like?
A trial flight is a great way to experience gliding before deciding whether you would like to take it further.
You will fly with an experienced club pilot and experience the amazing views of Northland from a completely different perspective.
Trial Flights: $100
If you decide to join the club on the day of your introductory flight, the $100 trial flight cost is included towards your membership.
🎓 Learn to Fly
Learning to fly a glider is both challenging and incredibly rewarding.
Training is carried out with qualified gliding instructors and progresses at your own pace. You will learn aircraft handling, launching, circuit planning, landings, soaring techniques, aviation safety and decision-making.
Gliding also provides an excellent foundation for anyone considering a future career in aviation.
Under 26?
We want to make aviation accessible to younger people.
Club members under 26 receive discounted membership, launches and introductory flying, helping make learning to fly considerably more affordable.
👥 A Club Run by Its Members
Kaikohe Gliding Club is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation.
Like most gliding clubs, members don't just turn up and fly — everyone helps make the operation work.
That may include helping with:
-
Launching and retrieving gliders
-
Ground operations
-
Aircraft care
-
Airfield maintenance
-
Club projects
-
Events and working bees
-
Helping new members learn how the club operates
You don't need aviation experience to get involved. There is always someone happy to show you the ropes.
✈️ Membership
We offer membership options for individual pilots, younger members and families.
Membership gives you the opportunity to become part of the club, receive flying training and participate in club operations.
You can find current membership options and fees on our Memberships page.
New members are always welcome.
